What Are the Requirements for PAT Testing?
There is no single UK law that mandates PAT testing by name. However, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require employers to maintain electrical equipment to prevent danger. PAT testing is the accepted method for meeting this duty for portable appliances.
A defensible PAT testing regime rests on risk-based testing intervals, documented results, unique appliance identification, and clear procedures for failed equipment. HSE guidance states the law “does not say how this should be done or how often” and that employers “should take a risk-based approach, considering the type of equipment and what it is being used for”.
Beyond legal duties, most employers' liability and public liability insurance policies require evidence of electrical equipment maintenance. PAT testing records are the standard evidence insurers expect.
