What Are the Requirements for PAT Testing?
There is no single UK law that mandates PAT testing by name. However, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require employers to maintain electrical equipment to prevent danger. PAT testing is the accepted method for meeting this duty for portable appliances.
The IET Code of Practice sets out what a compliant PAT testing regime looks like: risk-based testing intervals, documented results, unique appliance identification, and clear procedures for failed equipment. The 10 questions above are based on these core requirements.
Beyond legal duties, most employers' liability and public liability insurance policies require evidence of electrical equipment maintenance. PAT testing records are the standard evidence insurers expect.
